William Carlos Williams

Today is the birthday of poet William Carlos Williams, born in Rutherford, New Jersey in 1883.

He was a practicing doctor and a poet.

His poems are known for their simplicity, in that the subjects are often objects and moments of the everyday lives of everyday people.

His phrase - “no ideas but in things” - is one way to briefly explain his poetic philosophy.
