On The Nature Of Things

On The Nature Of Things

Lucretius

illustration from Stephen Greenblatt’s piece in The New Yorker about Lucretius

I finished reading Stephen Greenblatt’s book, The Swerve: How the World Became Modern, this week.  It inspired this morning’s poem on my daily poem project, Writing the Day.

March 14

Einstein’s birthday and my oldest son’s birthday.

Ratio of circle’s circumference to its diameter.

Pi Day and this year an unusual 3.14.14.

Which means nothing mathematically special since  π

is that rare worldly thing: a constant.

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, and when expressed as a decimal, the number is seemingly interminable. Pi Day is on March 14 (3.14). This is kind of a Pi month too being 3.14
Jersey’s most Pi-centric town is Princeton. The town was home to Albert Einstein, whose birthday was 3.14 (March 14 is my oldest son’s birthday).
Princeton has Pi recitations (yeah, people reciting the number for as many decimals out as possible), a pie eating contest, pie judging contest and some Pi Day specials around town.

Hear Albert Einstein

Time travel

Have you ever heard Albert Einstein talking?

In the fall of 1941, Albert Einstein gave this extraordinary reading of his essay “The Common Language of Science” to the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
